The Piano Music Companion
We present a system that we call ‘The Piano Music Companion’ and that is able to follow and understand (at least to some extent) a live piano performance. Within a few seconds this system can identify the piece that is being played, and the position within the piece. It then tracks the progress of the performer over time via a robust score following algorithm. The companion is useful in multipl...
متن کاملUnderstanding Indeterminate Music through Performance: Cage’s Solo for Piano
This article demonstrates how performance may further understanding of – and offer new perspectives on – indeterminate music, and in particular the ways in which performers realize the indeterminate aspects of the scores. Cage’s Solo for Piano (1957–8), one of the most celebrated indeterminate scores, is used as the model for such an approach. The close involvement that performers have with the...
متن کاملUnsupervised Transcription of Piano Music
We present a new probabilistic model for transcribing piano music from audio to a symbolic form. Our model reflects the process by which discrete musical events give rise to acoustic signals that are then superimposed to produce the observed data. As a result, the inference procedure for our model naturally resolves the source separation problem introduced by the the piano’s polyphony. In order...
متن کاملAutomatic Transcription of Piano Music
A hidden Markov model approach to piano music transcription is presented. The main difficulty in applying traditional HMM techniques is the large number of chord hypotheses that must be considered. We address this problem by using a trained likelihood model to generate reasonable hypotheses for each frame and construct the search graph out of these hypotheses. Results are presented using a reco...
متن کاملAutomatic Transcription of Piano Music
The automatic transcription of music is a key task in the field of information retrieval in audio signals. This paper summarizes recent works on automatic transcription of piano music. The first one is a full transcription system that analyzes an input recording and provides a MIDI file including the estimation of notes. The multipitch estimation stage of the system is based on a method which i...
